Personal information

Personal information

Choose which fields to collect from donors and which to require. Less is usually more.

Personal Info is where you decide what you collect from donors and how strict you are about requiring it. Every field you add costs some conversion; donors abandon forms that ask for too much. Collect what you need for receipts, communication, and compliance, and not much else.

Open the panel

Click the Personal Info tab in the left sidebar. The panel lists the fields you can collect on the popup's second step.

Name and email

Name and email are required by default. First and last name are separate fields, and the email address is where the donation receipt goes.

Choose fields to collect

Each optional field has an enable toggle, and enabled fields have a Required checkbox, so you can show a field but let donors leave it blank:

  • Address: street address, zip, city, and state/province as a group. Collect it if you mail anything to donors (year-end tax letters, thank-you cards, event invitations) or where compliance requires donor addresses on receipts.
  • Country: a separate toggle from Address, so US-only nonprofits can keep the form focused. Enable it if you accept international donors and need to know where they're located.
  • Phone: collect it only if you'll actually call or text donors. Phone numbers are sensitive, donors give them less readily than email, and requiring one depresses conversion noticeably.
  • Company: useful for employer matching outreach and corporate-giving lookups. Keeping it optional is almost always right: individuals skip it, donors representing companies fill it in.

How many fields to require

  • Default to optional, not required. Every required field is a friction point that loses some donors. Make a field required only with a specific reason, like receipts that need mailing addresses.
  • Audit what you actually use. If you've collected phone numbers for two years and never used them for anything, stop collecting them.
  • Remember the popup is a three-step form. Personal info is its own step, so every extra field lengthens the middle of the flow, and mobile donors feel it most.
